i was never into any sport until i watched a highlight reel of Dennis Rodman hustle plays. definitely not the most orthodox entrance into a basketball journey, but it was my entrance. ever since that day, it's pretty much been EAT, SLEEP, BREATHE basketball. i love the game, i love the hustle. i love the feeling of my legs giving out after practise. i love the feeling of forcing my opponent to pass the ball instead of shooting. i love the sound of the net when you swish a shot. i love the moment when i find an open teammate and passing the ball through defenders. i love every minute of it. unfortunately, i'm 5'10 and don't seem to be growing much more than that. that doesn't mean my hoop dreams ended, though. once i realized that i couldn't have the size advantage over my opponents, i focused on what i COULD do. i realized that quick hands and playing scrappy was the best way to defend anyone, regardless of size. this meant i had to do things like poke the ball loose and beat the opponent to their spot, forcing them to take a tough shot. in the scoring department, height rarely matters. i've worked day in and day out on my midrange jumper, and spend quality time working on my post moves, too. i'm not even close to being good yet, but i'm still learning.
my favorite player
there are so many reasons as to why Allen Iverson is my favorite basketball player of all time. to start, he is so REAL. he wears what he wants, says what he wants, plays the game the way he wants. they listed him at 6', but he really was closer to 5'10. at his size, and in a league where everyone was like 6'6, he outplayed almost everyone he ever matched up against. it's hard to find someone so unapologetically authentic in this day and age, because people are too busy trying to be someone they're not. Allen Iverson didn't care what the media says. you could bet your bottom dollar that he'd be fly as hell on gameday in the tunnel. he literally invented tunnel fashion. he's the reason they made a dress code for players. the NBA stopped him from releasing his debut album, due to it's explicit content that went against league policies. he made it cool to wear shooting sleeves. if you ask me, i think all of those things are the traits of a GOAT. i strive to be as ME as he was HIM. someone as charismatic, as raw, as transformative and as swaggy as him. the best pound-for-pound player in NBA history.
